Shining the Light of Christ in Yemen through Social Media

Openly believing in Jesus has always been dangerous in Yemen, where believers account for less than 0.1 percent of the population. During a brutal, long-running civil war, such belief can be lethal.

But even amid the chaos of war, epidemics, and famine, Yemeni Muslims discover Gospel truth and find spiritual encouragement through social media outreach.

“In 2008 I found a Bible in a shop,” one Yemeni man said over social media recently. “I bought it and began reading it. When I read the Gospels, I was amazed by the words of Jesus. I read the entire New Testament and was convinced that Jesus is the Son of God. So, I began following Him.”

That was early 2015 when Yemen was still moderately tolerant.

“I shared the good news with boldness. Then, the civil war came. I was beaten many times for ‘proselytizing,’ which is illegal. After one beating, my Bible was taken away. My brother awaits execution in prison for the same ‘crime.'”

Thankfully, he found a missionary website providing Bible studies and teaching to Yemenis.

“Now, I survive in the shadows, searching for Bible truth on the Internet,” he said. “I thank God that I have found your site. Thank you for sending me God’s Word and praying with me.”

Isaiah prophesied that the Yemeni people would see glimpses of the light of the Father’s promise: “All those from Sheba (Yemen) shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall bring good news, the praises of the Lord” (60:6).

Pray for believers using social media technology to reach Yemeni Muslims for Christ.

  • Pray the words of Isaiah 60:6 over the people of Yemen.
  • Pray for the end of this civil war, for deliverance for believers, and for entire households to come to faith.
